How Much Trash is There in the U.S.?
It's a very good question. The amount of trash generated in the United States has grown tremendously over the last fifty to sixty years. A large portion of this growth stems from the expansion of the American middle class, providing greater disposal income for households who can afford to buy more and more products and services. This, coupled with the rise of mass production and industrial growth, created a large market for commodities which invariably leads to a lot more waste being created. Foodstuffs and consumer goods became increasingly sold with packaging to protect the items being sold. Everything from bread to your newest cell phone now comes inside of a plastic or cardboard container, which in most cases is tossed into the trash can.
Today's world of rapid consumption generates approximately 250 million tons of garbage a year. That figure includes municipal solid waste (ex. Paper, plastic, food waste), construction debris, and hazardous materials. This puts the US at the top of the garbage heap, sort of speak, with only Russia coming close to that amount of garbage production at ~208 million tons of trash per year.
