Where Does my Waste End Up?
By and large, the number one destination for all of our trash is the landfill. Despite the resurgence in environmental awareness and alternative disposal measures, landfills still account for some 70% of all waste disposed of in the United States. Why is this? A big factor is cost. New recycling programs require additional infrastructure investments in order to get them up and running. And even programs that collect plastics, glass, and even paper don't guarantee fill participation by residents and businesses. Many times they are only recycling a portion of those materials in any given region simply because people don't bother to separate their recyclables from their trash.
The other big reason is that landfills are cheap to build, maintain, and also generate energy. The decomposition of organic debris in landfills creates methane, which is a very potent gas that is similar in energy density to gasoline (it's also the same type of gas you'll find being collected by hydraulic fracking wells, i.e. natural gas). Many landfills that are currently active are built to collect methane so that it can be burned up inside specialized engines. It can be used to power turbines for electricity production or it can be used to fuel trucks, dozers, and other equipment.
Even though landfilling is often viewed as a necessary evil, it is not necessarily the worst way to handle waste. Modern landfills, including the ones used by our Farmington dumpster rental service, are built to securely contain liquid and solid wastes so that they do not contaminate the environment. They are also routinely inspected by a combination of local, state, and federal agencies to ensure that they are holding up properly. When you consider that these facilities are built to last for decades, even centuries, you'll feel a little bit better about where your trash is going.
