How Does a Recycling Plant Turn Trash into Stuff?
Recycling plants are sophisticated facilities that are able to turn glass, plastics, metals, and even paper into useable goods. There are a variety of different recycling plants some of which focus on processing specific materials, while others are able to process more than one type of recyclable. But before any of these materials are ready for manufacturing they have to be properly collected and sorted.
The process starts at the collection center. Either a municipal trash service or private individuals bring their recyclables to a central location. This is often a transfer station or a dedicated recycling center. All of the deposited materials can either be sorted into separate bins, one for glass, plastics, etc. Or they can be placed in a single container for later sorting. The latter is referred to as single-stream recycling as everything ends up mixed together.
The method of collection varies from place to place, but the materials all end up at a recovery facility that will sort the recyclables and send them off to the appropriate recycling plant. Once there, items such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and glass containers will be melted down to create a raw substance. Once the materials cool off, they are cut into pieces to make transportation easier. Plastic materials are cut into small bite-sized pellets that manufacturers will use to create new plastic bottles, food containers, wrappers, and many other products.
Other materials are processed in similar ways, with the exception of paper. Paper waste has to be broken down with chemicals and water to reduce it to a pulp. The pulp is then dried and pressed to create new blank pieces of paper, cups, plates, and other items. However, this process eventually destroys the integrity of the paper, so recycled paper products cannot be recycled again.
