How Do Landfills Generate Energy from Their Garbage?
A lot of landfills are able to generate power for both their equipment and their local region. This process of turning trash to energy is part of a growing field of energy production known as waste to energy, or WtE for short. This process relies on capturing the methane gas generated by the decay of the garbage buried within the facility. Once that trash has started decomposing by the action of bacteria and other microbes, those little microorganisms start giving off methane which accumulates within the layers of trash and dirt of the landfill.
In the past, this huge bubble of methane would periodically explode causing the dumping grounds to burn. But since the 50's and 60's new environmental regulations have been established that require proper ventilation of all landfills. Part of the legally mandated ventilation system includes capture mechanisms that allow the methane to be vented through pipes and into storage vessels. The methane in these storage vessels can be burned using incinerators which can then drive electric turbines to create electricity.
There are a lot of facilities that use this process of waste removal to generate power and are looked upon as a relatively sustainable way to produce electricity. Since the waste that is already placed in landfills isn't going to be removed, it is reasoned that siphoning the methane and burning it is much more practical than letting it collect and releasing it into the atmosphere. Plus, the resulting carbon emissions are several times lower than that of coal-fired power plants, a commonly targeted source of greenhouse gas emissions.
