How Much Trash Does the United States Produce?
The United States is actually the largest producer of trash in the world. With just 300 million people comprising our population, we produce the most garbage out of every other country. You might wonder how that kind of discrepancy between population and trash production can be possible. Well a lot of it has to do with the fact that Americans consume a lot more goods than other populations. Our society is relatively affluent, allowing more of us to buy things which create waste.
Such things as food, clothing, electronics, books, and other items create waste. This is either through the packaging they come in or some other use that they have which creates additional waste. So all of the plastic, cardboard, paper, and food waste that results from consuming all of these items has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is usually the landfill.
The U.S. produces roughly 250 million tons of garbage annually, most of which goes to landfills. The next closest country is Russia which has an annual production rate of approximately 208 million tons of trash. After that the numbers fall dramatically as very few countries even come close to breaking the 200 million ton mark.
Fortunately, it's not all doom and gloom.
