How Does Trash Become Energy?
That's a question that many people don't even think to ask. Fewer still are even aware that trash can be turned into electricity. But there are many ways in which trash can be used to produce energy, as well as other byproducts that are equally beneficial. The umbrella term for these various methods is waste-to-energy or WtE for short, and they are becoming very popular in North America and Europe.
One of the most frequently used WtE technologies are called trash incinerators. Prior to modern improvements in WtE tech., these facilities simply burned trash and vented the byproducts into the atmosphere. Nowadays these incinerators are built to capture and burn methane as a fuel source for electric turbines. The other byproducts are scrubbed out of the exhaust which is then released into the air, but devoid of any harmful gases.
Of course, the process of burning trash does produce carbon dioxide, but the amounts released pale in comparison to coal and other fossil fuel power plants. Using these facilities is generally considered a sustainable source of power due to their low carbon emissions and plentiful supply of fuel (i.e. trash). The electricity generated by these plants is distributed through the local grid network, as well as to on-site machinery which helps to offset carbon emissions from trucks and dozers.
The other method of using trash for energy comes from siphoning methane from landfills. Landfill gas is composed of a variety of gases, but the real valuable gas is methane. This is the same stuff that energy companies refer to as natural gas as it seeps up through shale formations. Organic waste that decays anaerobically (without oxygen) produces methane. This gas can be collected using vents and burned up, similar to the way incinerators work.
While our dumpster rental service in West Hazleton doesn't necessarily use these facilities, we have used them in our other service areas. As more companies and communities begin to use these WtE technologies, we'll be able to turn more of your trash into energy!
