Why are Landfills So Commonly Used?
Landfills have been in use for a long time. In fact, the first dumping sites originate from ancient South American civilizations that had designated areas outside of major cities where people would take their refuse. Of course, prior to the 20th century these landfills were not designed for sustainability. In fact, they were little more than open pits of garbage. But during the middle part of the 20th century laws and construction standards changed so that all landfills had to be built in a way that minimized environmental impact.
These changes have indirectly led to the continued widespread use of landfills for the purpose of waste disposal. Today, landfills are built with several materials that absorb liquid runoff and prevent solid wastes from leaving the site. They also include ventilation systems which keep methane from seeping out of the ground, a problem which used to result in landfill fires. A growing number of landfills are also equipped with power generators which run off the site's methane.
But it's not just improvements that have made landfills so popular. They are also dirt-cheap to build and operate. Setting up recycling and composting services requires having a hefty amount of cash on hand to either contract with regional haulers or build your own facilities to process the materials. Many cities don't have money to spare on improving waste management services and therefore don't offer alternatives to landfills.
