Where Does my Trash Go After Pickup?
The final destination of our customer's trash largely depends on what it consists of. With our dumpster rental service in Larksville we recycle most construction debris as it is relatively easy to do. That includes heavier materials such as concrete and brick. When it comes to regular trash from households, the majority of the waste will be sorted in order to reclaim materials that can be sold off to reclamation centers. The rest of it will go to landfills and other disposal sites within Luzerne County.
Of course, in any typical service area there will be a variety of different facilities in use for our disposal process. One of the most frequently used facilities is called a transfer station which is essentially a centralized collection point for trash haulers. These facilities accept trash loads from both public and private haulers, including residents, of a particular city. These stations are also the ones that will typically sort the waste so that recyclables and landfill waste are separated before being loaded onto trucks. Once the materials are on the appropriate trucks the waste will be sent off to its final destination.
Recyclables can be taken to either a Materials Recovery Facility, or MRF, or sent straight to a reclamation plant. MRFs typically sort recyclables into piles that represent their particular material, so plastics go with plastics and paper goes with paper. There are other types of MRF's that sort mixed waste that hasn't been separated at a transfer station. These ones are generally called “dirty†MRFs since they work with all trash instead of just recyclables.
Everything that can't be recycled will be sent to either a landfill or a trash incinerator. Landfills are designed to store decades worth of trash in a controlled environment. Most landfills built today feature ventilation systems, as well as facilities that can draw power from the methane generated by the buried waste. This significantly reduces the impact these sites have on the environment. Trash incinerators can also be used in conjunction with landfills to reduce trash volume and produce electricity. This process also has a significantly lower impact on the environment, as well as the climate, thanks to very low CO2 emissions.
