What is the Zero Waste Movement?
Being a dumpster rental company, we're in the business of finding new and better ways to dispose of waste. One of the growing areas of waste disposal involvements the "Zero Waste" movement which is a concept that envisions a society that reuses or recycles all of its waste. There are many proponents and advocates for increasing the use of recycling programs in major urban areas, as well as small-town communities.
However, the kind of recycling envisioned by some Zero Waste practitioners is different from current practices. Current recycling programs generally collect the materials after they have been thrown out and broken down to make new products from the resulting raw material. Under a zero waste model, the waste product would be reused as is (after being cleaned) once it's returned to the manufacturer. For instance, you would buy a bottle of milk at the store, drink it, and then return the empty bottle to a distribution hub where it will be returned to the factory for use again.
The entire concept depends on the ability of companies and consumers to reuse their products over and over again, which is something that very few companies build into their products. There is also a schism within the zero waste community over whether or not recycling all discarded materials is a "zero" waste goal. The difference is between recovering plastic bottles and melting them down to make new plastic or reusing the plastic bottles as is without any further processing.
While both methods have their advantages, we prefer to use recycling with our dumpster rentals. It provides the best way to divert waste from landfills as there are far more recycling facilities available to us than true "zero waste" processing centers. But as the movement grows you can bet on us using them more and more with our waste containers.
