How Do Landfills Maintain Their Integrity?
Landfills utilize a number of different mechanisms to ensure that the trash they contain does not impact local residential areas or the environment. One of the primary ways in which they ensure this is the use of several different minerals during the construction of the facility. The base of a landfill is covered with a thick and durable layer of plastic which is meant to contain any liquids that are deposited in the site. It also guards against leachate which is a fluid that builds up within landfills.
On top of this plastic sheath are several layers of gravel and clay which work to keep the layers above stable and contained completely within the bounds of the site. The gravel primarily provides a stable foundation for the hundreds of millions of tons of waste that lie above it. The clay is used for its absorptive properties which helps contain the leachate and other liquid wastes. Each subsequent layer of trash is also covered with fresh soil to help keep out animals and insects. It also seals in the associated odors of the trash and provides additional stability to new layers placed on top.
Each landfill is also built with a gas collection system to capture methane and other gases that are created by the breakdown of garbage. These various gases are either converted for use in energy production or used as fuel for the site's equipment. We use a number of such facilities in the Buffalo area when disposing of trash from our dumpster rentals.
