How Do Landfills Reduce Their Environmental Impact?

Part of this change has come from the modern environmentalist movement which saw the creation of the E.P.A. and several other agencies at the state level to protect and promote environmental safeguards.

Landfills built today all require the use of several mixed materials as a base layer before any trash can be dumped at the facility. These materials include gravel, dirt, clay, and durable plastic tarps. The exact base of a landfill is built from dirt which is then covered in plastic. The plastic serves as a boundary between any residual waste runoff and the actual ground supporting the landfill. From there the plastic is covered with clay and gravel. The gravel provides stability while the clay absorbs any liquids within the site.
