How Does Hazardous Waste Get Disposed?
Hazardous waste has to be disposed of just like any other form of waste. The only difference is that anything considered hazardous has to be transported and disposed of according to local, state, and federal law. Obviously, some substances are a greater hazard than others. Industrial waste is one of the most dangerous forms of waste due to its often toxic or carcinogenic properties.
The most extreme example of this is nuclear waste from power plants. Spent fuel rods from nuclear power plants remain radioactive for thousands of years. So the only way to dispose of them is to store them in specially designed containment facilities. Currently, the vast majority of nuclear waste is stored using containment units located near the plant of origin. Plans for developing a centralized containment facility have been in development and on hold, on and off, for decades with no resolution in sight.
But apart from nuclear waste, there are many hazardous materials produced by homes and non-industrial businesses. These can consist of chemical cleaners, paints, lacquers, oils, and various other common products. These items are generally prohibited from being disposed of in landfills, but this can vary based on local regulations. We currently do not accept any of these items in our Tigard dumpster rentals, but there are local resources in Portland that can provide you with a way to dispose of them.
Of course, the best way to dispose of hazardous waste is not to create it in the first place. Consider using non-chemical cleaning solutions or at least making sure that your batteries, tires, and other household waste is recycled rather than dumped in the regular trash pile. This won't just help the environment, it'll also help your community!
