How Did the Waste Management Industry Start?
The waste management industry was created out of a demand for efficient and clean methods of disposing of trash from urban areas. This demand peaked with the Industrial Revolution which saw the commercialization of many different industries such as manufacturing and agriculture. Consumers across the globe were suddenly able to buy a wide range of goods that resulted in a lot of excess waste. The rise of industrialization also allowed for populations to grow, which creates more consumers, which creates more garbage, and so on.
So out of the huge population and commercial growth of the U.S. and other countries came a new demand for services that could gather up people's trash for them. One such service was devised by a small trash collection company run by the Dempster brothers, a pair of entrepreneurial brothers who designed the first dumpster and front loading garbage truck. Their new invention would form the model for all waste management services to follow. Their system used trucks to empty waste containers that were leased to businesses and property owners for collecting their trash. This system would later be adapted for picking up trash in residential neighborhoods through curbside bins.
The Dempster Bros. waste containers would later come to be known as dumpsters. So in effect we owe our own dumpster rental service in Perry to their original system of garbage collection.
